Get ready for the 83rd annual Southern California Yachting Association MidWinters Regatta. This is the regatta that kicks off the Star Class season. It is on the 18th and 19th of February. Entry application is available here.

San Diego Yacht Club

It’s always good to have a few Cheerleaders in our class. This season we have Ben Mitchell from San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) promoting their One Design Weekend (ODW). Benny as we know him, has been rallying more Stars to come out and play with some of the Rock Stars down there.

Benny can help arrange storage for Stars between regattas so contact him by e-mail at conpar@aol.com. Note February ODW will only be raced on Saturday the 4th. since Sunday the 5th is Super Bowl Sunday. Please bookmark SDYC race Calendar located here.

2011 Rollin's Bowl winners: Mark Reynolds, Hal Haenel, Mark Strube, Erik Lidecis, Jim Buckingham, George Szabo

With the help of several members in our District and the help of Racing Chairs of the hosting Yacht Clubs, our 2012 District 5 race schedule is now final (see right sidebar).

This season the District 5 Championship will be hosted by Newport Harbor Yacht Club on the weekend of June 30th and July 1st.

We are also continuing the “2012 Stump Peters Series”, a five regatta series first started last season (denoted by “SP” on schedule). The series brought out top teams in our district like Mark Reynolds /Hal Haenel and George Szabo / Mark Strube. Last season’s Stump Peter’s Series winners were:

With the centennial of our Star Class this year, you will not want to miss the Centennial Celebration in Larchmont, New York September 12th – 18th. There will be a Wooden & Classics Class regatta which will be held September 14th – 15th. The modern class (hull numbers above 7299) will race September 16th – 18th. For additional information visit the Centennial events page. After the celebration don’t bother bringing your Star back from the East Coast because the North American Championship will be held in Tampa, Florida November 11th – 16th hosted by Davis Island Yacht Club. Then of course there is the Rolex Miami OCR in January and Bacadi Cup in March, also in Miami.

7525 in Santa BarbaraWhy not start the celebration early and train for our class Centennial Celebration early by racing in the King of Spain Regatta this July 23rd and 24th hosted by California Yacht Club. The King of Spain Regatta is also our district championship, so expect more competition than usual! After the King of Spain it’s on to the Lipton Cup in picturesque Santa Barbara held August 13th -14th. There is nothing like racing in beautiful conditions against a striking backdrop that is the Santa Barbara Mountains. Santa Barbara Yacht Club has hosted this event for the past 60 years and has always welcomed our class with open arms. Awards will also be given to the top finisher of the 7000 and under hull numbered Star.

This year we are encouraging more Stars to travel and enjoy the hospitality of all the wonderful yacht clubs that share our love for the Star with a 5 regatta series that starts with the Rollins Bowl hosted at San Diego Yacht Club and ends with the Calvin Paige Regatta hosted at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. Based on highpoint scoring system, the series winner will be presented with the series trophy after the Calvin Paige Regatta. The credit goes to Bill Stump and Rick Peters for the excellent idea. NOR to follow. So start building your team and get those boat out!

 

If you missed the Starlight Awards Dinner which was held at Doug Steele’s home, you missed out on the “World Famous” grilling skills of SMB’s resident Argentinean grill Chef, Jorge Benedid. He is not a bad Star sailor, but his mastery of the grill earns him a gold star in our book. Special recondition goes to Christine Mills of ChristineMillsPhotography.com for photos of all the 2010 Starlighters, Alejandro Bogacov, SMB Fleet Captain, for putting the team together to make the Starlight Awards Dinner happen and lastly Doug Steele for opening up his home to host the awards dinner. This is the formula for keeping a fleet vibrant and growing.
