In Memory of Ed Sprague

Edwin “Ed” Sprague 1939 – 2013

By: Frieda Pallas-Sprague

Edwin “Ed” Sprague, age 73, beloved husband of Frieda Pallas-Sprague, brother of Nancy Duddy, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Uncle to two nieces and four nephews, and many great nieces and nephews and cousins. Ed passed away on July 10, 2013, in San Diego, CA.  He was born September 8, 1939, in Pearl City, Oahu, Hawaii.

Ed traveled at a young age with his parents, attending twelve schools from Guam to Washington D.C.  When Ed’s father retired from the Navy the family moved to Lodi, CA, on to Palo Alto, CA, and Ed graduated from Palo Alto High School. Ed earned his degree from Menlo College, where he started to build his business foundation.

His successful career spanned companies such as Wells Fargo Bank, General Dynamics, and Dun & Bradstreet. Ed changed careers to become Director of Property Improvement for Travelodge and Trusthouse Forte, with responsibility for over 600 hotels and 110 restaurants worldwide.

Ed and Frieda then started their own business in Property Management for the next 20 years.

Ed’s hobbies included yacht racing, skiing, reading, traveling, home improvements and planning their next adventure. Ed was an amazing student of history and had been active in various historical associations, contributing with his natural creative writing skills.

Ed also served as treasurer at the Southwestern Yacht Club, and spent many enjoyable hours in the “small boat yard”.

Ed and Frieda raced together in the Star boat, and the Star Class was his passion.  He spent twelve years editing a two-volume book about the “San Diego Bay Star Fleet” which chronicled the history from 1925 to the present. Ed served in every role for the 5th District Star Class, most known for his unofficial role as historian.

“Unkle” Ed adopted many sailors when they came to town for Star Class regattas. Ask him a question about a race and he could recall the race results in detail and tell you a story about the regatta. Ed Sprague built and enjoyed the camaraderie of the Star Class.

Ed’s was a fighter to the end, and continued to enjoy a good sense of humor through his health challenges. His memory will live on through his writing and his kindness in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Peter’s by the Sea Lutheran Church on July 20th, 2013 at 1:00 PM followed by a reception at Southwestern Yacht Club.
